Use Fresh Color Combinations To Make Your Home Feel Brand New

color combinations

Have you ever walked into a home and felt immediately at ease? Or, on the other hand, walked into a space that felt garish, cramped or uncomfortable? Psychologists, designers, and artists have long mused that color can affect a person’s mood. The paint in a room can make you feel calm, energized – or frazzled. So, how do some people instinctively get it right, even with bold colors? And how can you use color combinations to refresh your own home?

Where do You Look for Inspirational Color Combinations?

You might want to have a well-designed home, but have no idea where or how to start. Before we get into the science of color, here are a few brainstorming ideas to get you past that creative block …

  • How do you Want to Feel?

Come up with an adjective that describes the way you want a particular room in your home to feel — cozy, vibrant or fresh, for example. Then, choose your color accordingly. Are you looking a relaxing beige tone, or a vibrant coral? Let your feelings guide your choice.

  • Go to Nature for Inspiration

Think about the colors found in nature … Do you feel restful among green leaves, or along the shore? Do you wait all year for those bright fall colors? Or are the subtler tones of winter more your style? You can bring these earthy colors into your home to create an environment you’re sure to love all year round.

  • Use your Favorite Pattern as a Guide

Another option is to use fabric as a cue … do you have a favorite bedspread, rug, or piece of furniture? Pick out a shade from that pattern and bring a color you already love onto the walls. You’ll feel embraced by the fresh new style.

  • Get Artsy!

Do you have a favorite piece of art, or a collection unique to you? Take a second look at the things you love. How gorgeous would a collection of sea glass vases look against a seafoam green wall? Could the matting of your favorite painting be an inspiration for a warm new living room color? Use a base color drawn from art or collectibles throughout the whole room to wow your guests and make your home an inspiring place to be.

  • Don’t be Afraid of the Dark

Don’t be afraid to go with a favorite color, even if it’s a little darker. Darker colors can add richness to a space. Consider painting a bedroom deep navy, or painting a den rich brown or forest green! You’d be amazed at how these darker shades can give your home’s style a major boost.

Use Color Theory to Make Your Home Beautiful

People who design fabulous interiors for a living use the rule of three: three complementary colors – a dominant color, a secondary color, and an accent color – that can be used throughout the room. This tip, drawn from color theory, can make any room look better. We’ve written before about utilizing accent colors. Turns out, the science of color theory can help even the novice home decorator.

  • Complementary Color Schemes

Why do orange and blue pair so well together? Complementary colors are directly across from one another on the color wheel. As long as you vary the shades so they’re not too intense, these pairings can really pop. Think about using three together. For example, yellow paired with blue-violet and red-violet can create a lovely look.

  • Triad Color Scheme

Try this design idea for classic looks: three colors equally spaced from one another, like red, yellow, and blue. For a more exotic look? Try combining green with violet and orange accents.

  • Monochromatic Color Scheme

This design scheme is in the title. Use the same color family, but incorporate different shades. For example, combine dark and light blues, or purple and lavender.

You can’t go wrong when you choose your favorite shades and then stick to classic combos.
